How can I deal with a child that is shorter than other kids his age?

  •  Children all grow at different rates and there always seems to be that one child who is behind the others.
  •  If your child comes from a family of normal height, it is most likely just a matter of delayed growth so rest assured that he will catch up eventually.
  •  If there are existing medical problems, or hormonal deficiencies, it is possible that your child will remain short.
  • You should talk to your pediatrician to have tests done if you have concerns about your child’s size.

Today we are going to cover a FEW DAILY ISSUES, you may have you may have with your kids.

IS COD LIVER OIL GOOD FOR CHILDREN?

In the old times, Cod liver oil was very popular and considered healthy. It is no doubt rich in VITAMIN A and VITAMIN D .These are fat soluble vitamins and do not get expelled from our body if in excess like the other vitamins. So if given in excess, it may cause more harm than good.
It may still be given if your child is deficient in these vitamins,. So give  only if your doctor recommends this.
Natural sources of vitamin D and vitamin A will be coloured fruits and vegetables and natural sunlight. Not too difficult to give to your kids, we guess!

MY CHILD CANNOT CONCENTRATE MUCH ON STUDIES.CAN YOU HELP?

This is one of the most common problems when a child is studying. The first thing to do will be

  • To fix a study time and place. This automatically pushes the mind to concentrate.
  • Also when he sits down, break the study time into 15-20 minutes periods giving him a specific task to complete at that time.
  • If possible for a few days, sit with him and help him to concentrate when the mind wavers too much.
  • Keep the room quiet if possible though soft music while doing a subject like mathematics can help to increase the concentration again.
  • Also before studying, doing deep breathing exercises for a few minutes may help.
  • Everyday morning, make it a practice to exercise the mind. One exercise to increase the concentration is staring at a lit candle for a few minutes everyday from a distance of 1- 11/2 feet.

MY CHILD IS A PICKY EATER.WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Young children will frequently become picky eaters, or go through phases where they want to eat only specific types of foods. This is really nothing to be concerned about.

These phases tend to come and go and unless they last for an extended period of time there is little chance of them becoming problematic.

As long as your child is healthy overall and is within a normal weight and height range, your pediatrician will most likely tell you to just wait out the phase and not worry.  Pay attention to what your child is eating over the course of a week or month, and you are likely to discover that she is eating a healthy diet in the long run.

MY CHILD IS AN INFANT AND HAS STARTED BITING FOR EVERYTHING.HOW CAN I AVOID IT?

Biting is not a habit at this stage. It is a way of getting your undivided attention and has come because she feels that you are neglecting her. Do not shout or scold but tell her a firm ‘no-no’ every time she does it. You may also find a pattern when she does this. So try to avoid the situations when she does this more frequently as when you are talking on phone.
Remember that she may also be teething .so try to give her tethers or raw carrot to chew on. Cold watermelons which are frozen also work as very good tethers.

MY CHILD KEEPS ON INTERFEREING WHEN I AND MY HUSBAND ARE TALKING.HOW CAN I STOP THIS HABBIT?

This is a common scenario in all the houses and happens more when your child wants attention. This is more commonly seen after the age of three years when a feeling of jealousy may also come in for either of you.
So it is better to set a firm limit when you are talking and to also avoid him sometimes when things are going out of hand. The situation can be handled well when you give him adequate time and attention when your spouse is not around and explain to him at that time about the times when you need to talk to his dad alone without disturbance.

Children are smart enough to know all this and also smart enough to interfere every time they want attention. So balance your timings well and things can be sorted out better.

This is an article we picked up from somewhere and it has a profound implication on parenting…Do give a thought on this!

“A saint asked his disciples, ‘Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?’

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, ‘Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.’

‘But, why to shout when the other person is just next to you?’ asked the
Saint. ‘Isn’t it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why
do you shout at a person when you’re angry?’

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint.

Finally he explained, ‘When two people are angry at each other, their Hearts
distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to
hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to
shout to hear each other through that great distance.’

Then the saint asked, ‘What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t
shout at each other but talk softly, why? Because their hearts are very
close. The distance between them is very small…’

The saint continued, ‘When they love each other even more, what happens?
They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love.
Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other
and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.’

MORAL:
When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words
that distance each other more, else there will come a day when the
distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.”

Also think twice before shouting at your kids…remember that it is driving you two apart and there is nothing in this world that you cannot handle without shouting and that includes your kids too!

THIS IS A ‘NO-NO’
