Some experts point out that education upto now was aimed mainly at squeezing knowledge into children, and did not do much to develop their talents. The main objective of education in the future should be changed, they say, to emphasize the drawing out of latent abilities; working directly to children’s brains.
The point is that, so far, school education has been concerned with educating mainly the left hemisphere. The left is often called the language brain while the right is called the image brain. This means that the left hemisphere of the brain functions through language and the right hemisphere functions with imagery.
Upto now, education has been mostly conducted through language that reaches the left brain. The right brain education method that works on the right brain through imagery was little known. This is not surprising because the functions of the right brain themselves were little known.

An American named Thomas.R.Blakeslee wrote a book The right Brain in 1980. This book was published in Japan under the title, The right brain revolution. It is safe to say that many people came to know more about the right brain with this book.

Blakeslee is an inventor who graduated from the California institute of technology with a background in electronics. His book is used as a textbook in many technical colleges. As an inventor he was vaguely aware that he had different ways of using his brain. Then he learned the different functions of the left and the right brain through recent research on the cerebrum. He got so interested that he spent all his spare time studying literature concerning the brain. He wrote this book to consolidate the fragmentary existing knowledge on the left and right brains to form a systemized view.

It is believed that the very use of the right brain enhances creativity. The right brain represents the unconscious mind. The most appropriate phrase to describe the right brain is “the nonverbal mind”. The mechanism of human talents and creativity can be set in motion through developing the right, not the left brain.

In the past, brain weight and the number of folds of the brain were thought to possess the secret of intelligence. But such simple things did not hold the secret. Investigating the right brain can shed great light on the development of intelligence and creativity.

Once these facts are revealed, we can think of a totally different kind of concept and principle of education or approach to education than the present left brain emphasis.

When did the notion of IQ come about? In 1908, Binet and Simon of France established a method of measuring intellectual faculties. Their methods became widely known as an IQ test and was highly praised as one of the most important achievements of modern psychology.

The IQ or ‘Intelligence Quotient’ test was designed to evaluate, in a child of low intellectual faculties, the degree of delay in development. For a few years prior to the completion of this intelligence measurement method, Binet had been studying the value of intelligence tests. Binet first felt the need to improve the method of measuring intelligence in 1904 when he was appointed by the education minister of France as a member of a panel for identifying low intelligence children in the paris public schools. In 1905, he established the first edition of the “Binet – Simon intelligence measurement scale”. This test was welcomed quite enthusiastically since it could measure a child’s intelligence easily.

Nowadays, this IQ test is rather considered as a method for the measurement of genius. If a child’s score is higher than 140 in this test, he is called a genius. Are all children geniuses if they score higher than 140?
The IQ test certainly detects intelligence. A highly intelligent person may score high in an IQ test. But a person who scores high in this test is not necessarily intelligent. Similarly, a person who scores low in these tests is not necessarily low in intelligence.

If this is so, intelligence tests do not measure the test taker’s intelligence accurately. Now, what is an intelligence test anyway? What is intelligence? Can the intelligence of a genius be measured by a test on a piece of paper?

The dictionary defines intelligence as “the work of the brain to understand things and to think”. An “intelligence Quotient” means “an index to show the degree of intellectual development that will be calculated by the test takers mental ageon an IQ test by his chronological age and multiplying by 100. Note, that the index of an IQ test ranges from 49 to 152. 46% of the test takers score from 91 through 109. Hardly 1% score more than 140. In other words, a childs IQ merely shows this childs development stage compared to other children of the same age, and does not show whether or not he is a genius.

It seems that rue intelligence cannot be measured by an IQ test; true intelligence seems to be demonstrated as something else. We should not be satisfied with good results on an IQ test. Instead, we should understand what intelligence is and then think of the proper way to develop it.

What can I do to make sure my child is eating healthy?

It is easy to make sure that your pre-schooler is eating healthy because you’re responsible for all of their meals and snacks.  The difficulty begins when your child starts school, and you no longer have control over what they are eating and when. If you start teaching your child how to make healthy food choices from an early age, you are setting your child up for a lifetime of healthy eating habits.

Keep plenty of fruits and vegetables on hand for healthy snacking, and restrict refined sugar as much as possible from day one.

How should I deal with a picky eater?

Young children will frequently become picky eaters, or go through phases where they want to eat only specific types of foods. This is really nothing to be concerned about. These phases tend to come and go and unless they last for an extended period of time there is little chance of them becoming problematic. As long as your child is healthy overall and is within a normal weight and height range, your pediatrician will most likely tell you to just wait out the phase and not worry.  Pay attention to what your child is eating over the course of a week or month, and you are likely to discover that she is eating a healthy diet in the long run.

How do I decide whether to give my child vitamins?

A good multi-vitamin is a smart choice for children and adults.  Many of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need are not easily absorbed from the foods we eat. So supplementing is a good idea. There are many different varieties, containing different combinations. You should opt for a children’s formula, and consider asking your pediatrician for a recommendation.

How should I deal with a child who will not eat three meals a day?

Understanding and patience are your best allies in this situation. As any pediatrician will tell you, it is very common for young children to eat only one or two full meals over the course of a day. Instead of eating the rest of their food in sit down meals, they often tend to “graze” on smaller portions throughout the day.  This may be because your child does not need as much food as you’re assuming. The average toddler only needs a few tablespoons at each meal. To make sure your child is getting enough to eat, help her to make healthy choices throughout the day by keeping on hand baskets of fresh fruits, cut up vegetables and other healthy snacks in portioned containers.

How can I get my child to try new foods?

Every parent dreams of having a child who is willing to eat just about anything. However, most wake up to the nightmare of children who are quite restrictive in the foods that they will eat without an argument.  The solution starts with the first foods that you feed your infant, and continues throughout your child’s early years.  Some parents will have a rule that their children must try one bite of every food being served.  Other parents concentrate on providing a large variety of tasty foods, hoping that their children will start to try new things.  Either route is a good idea, it really just depends on whether you are bothered by a picky child. The other alternative is to wait it out, knowing that in most cases, a picky child will grow up to be an adult who is willing to eat most foods.
